Training and Behavior Books
Mother Knows Best The Natural Way to Train Your Dog. By Carol
Lea Benjamin. This is my favorite read for the best puppy
training/people training book, filled with humor and common sense.
Before You Get Your Puppy and After You Get Your Puppy...the
clock is ticking! Both books by Dr. Ian Dunbar are excellent.
‘Before’ talks about finding the correct breed, assessing the puppy’s
developmental status, and the puppy’s house manners/training the first
week home. ‘After’ addresses the urgent need for socialization,
teaching biting inhibition and continuing socialization. Must
haves for new puppy owners!
Good Owners, Great Dogs The Kilcommons Way to a Perfect
Relationship. By Brian Kilcommons. Mr. Kilcommons trained
with Barbara Woodhouse who was THE dog trainer of her time in England. Her book ‘No Bad Dogs’ is still a standard, as is ‘The Woodhouse Way’.
The Art of Raising a Puppy By the Monks of New Skete. A
good book with some excellent points, but a bit too serious. (my opinion).
The Other End of The Leash Why we do what we do, around dogs.
By Patricia B. McConnell, Ph.D. Ways to understand, communicate
and effectively train your dog. This book educates the owner.
Breed Specific Books
The Versatile Vizsla By Marion Coffman.
Excellent all-round book that covers everything regarding this great breed. Ms. Coffman has been in the breed for 30+ years. Most
of the pictures are from her kennel; however, there are some ancestors
of my line featured as well.
The Complete Vizsla By Gay Gottlieb. The most
famous Vizsla breeder in England. Excellent book.
The Vizsla By B.C. Boggs. This was the first
book written in this country, about the breed. Although it contains
some good information, it’s really more for breeders, field trialers and
those researching pedigrees.
Vizslas Barron Books. Very informative
book, much more detail about the breed than most generic breed books.
